Trout fishing questions, from someone who hasn't put a line out since 1998...

Looking to get my license and do some fishing from the shore and wading up at a pair of lakes in Tahoe National Forest in mid-May and late-July. I've got a 30+ year old Abu Garcia Cardinal Bronco 4 combo rod and reel (6'6", medium light action, 0-15g lures, 6-18lb line, medium-sized spinning reel), with an unknown type of line that's been on there since probably 1992. The last time I used it was when I was 15 and in the Boy Scouts, and I had zero luck with it, and the old line was binding up.

I plan on removing the line and replacing it with a 6lb-equivalent braided line with a 3-5' long leader of 6lb monofilament, based on some recommendations from friends who are more avid fisherman who felt that the braided line would stop the binding and the monofilament leader would be less visible to the fish. Not sure on the lures or bait, but I figure I'll buy a small variety and see what works, since I don't know anyone who's fished these particular lakes.

Anyway, just looking for some suggestions and tips, or even comments on how the rig I've got isn't really suited for what I'm planning, if that's the case. FWIW, the rod/reel is a hand-me-down from my grandfather, who I understand mainly used it for fishing off of docks in saltwater.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
