K98 Sporter Rescue

I bought a bubba'd K98 on another board about 2 weeks ago. The price was right and it had not been badly disfigured. According to the seller, it was a closet find, probably a bringback. The rifle appeared to have originally been all matching, but some parts are missing so we will never know. I tend to enjoy these types of endeavors and returning an old wardog to its fighting trim is always a good thing.

So, the bad:
The (matching...ugh) stock has been butchered via shortening and drilling sling mounts into the bottom
Handguard gone
Both barrel bands gone
Band spring gone
Sight Hood gone
Cleaning rod gone
Capture screws gone

And the good:
All remaining parts are stamped matching (complete bolt, receiver, floorplate, etc. Some have faint stampings but all are 9087)
No import marks
No peening
No EP
No rebluing,
No rust or pitting
Mirror bore
Good remaining bluing and sharp German proofs.

I will update the thread as I progress in the restoration. I do not intend to use any repro parts whatsoever. Quality K98 stocks are getting pricey and scarce, but we shall see what we can scrounge up!

So here is the soon to be made over Bubba K98:
